Orcan Energy expands portfolio with new high-efficiency ORC system eP 1000
Munich, 29.07.2025 – With the new efficiency PACK eP 1000, Orcan Energy (Orcan) is expanding its portfolio with a modular high-performance system in the megawatt range for the recovery of industrial waste heat and geothermal applications. The system is particularly suitable for high heat quantities at temperatures above 200 °C, but can also be used at temperatures as low as approx. 120 °C. Orcan is thus continuing its successful product philosophy: the modular and standardized container solutions enable fast, flexible, and economically attractive installation - with minimal operating costs and autonomous operation. Energy-intensive industries, such as cement, glass, and steel, can integrate the eP 1000 directly into existing industrial processes and decarbonize them. Holcim and E.ON have already opted for the eP 1000 at Holcim's Dotternhausen site; the large-scale project will be implemented immediately.
More power, better efficiency
The eP 1000 expands the Orcan portfolio with a powerful solution for larger heat sources. With a net electrical output of over 1 megawatt per unit, the system combines high capacity with a modular design. This is made possible by the use of a turbine in the ORC (Organic Rankine Cycle) circuit. Orcan Energy works with renowned suppliers with many years of experience in this field.
If the heat is already available as a liquid medium, it can be connected directly to the ORC. If the heat is in gaseous form (e.g., exhaust gas), it is transferred to an intermediate thermal oil circuit by means of an external heat exchanger. The thermal oil then transports the heat to the ORC modules at a consistently high temperature level. The result: waste heat is converted into electricity – efficiently, flexibly, and with low maintenance. Orcan's latest product also retains the modular and standardized design that guarantees higher quality, faster implementation, lower cost risk, and maximum flexibility.
“With the eP 1000, we can convert industrial high-temperature waste heat into usable energy even more effectively by increasing efficiency—even at partial load. In doing so, we remain true to our successful concept of modular and standardized container construction,” explains Andreas Sichert, CEO of Orcan Energy.
Powerful and flexible ORC system for large-scale applications
The eP 1000 is a significantly larger ORC system compared to the eP systems previously sold by Orcan (eP 050.100, eP 150.200), which are designed for small to medium-sized applications. The new system consists of several modular, pre-manufactured containers that form the machine room and contain the central turbine and other core components of the ORC cycle. On site, it is connected to external, flexibly scalable air coolers.
Instead of a screw expander, which is otherwise used in the eP series, the eP 1000 uses a turbine that enables particularly high efficiency – even at only about 25% partial load operation.
In addition, the system is permanently technically sealed, so that no ATEX zone – i.e., no potentially explosive area – is required at the ORC installation site, which is another unique selling point and a significant safety and cost advantage.
Modular, scalable, and flexible despite larger dimensions
Despite its larger dimensions, Orcan's modular philosophy remains unchanged: the standardized modules of the eP 1000 are produced and tested at the company's factory in Kiel and assembled on site to form a fully automatic, low-maintenance system. The external air cooling system is flexibly scalable depending on the location requirements and is supplied by Orcan.
Orcan not only supplies the ORC system as a finished, standardized module, but also the complete turnkey solution for waste heat utilization from a single source – including heat exchangers, thermal oil circuit, and electrical integration. Orcan's in-house project team offers comprehensive EPC services, enabling customers to benefit from high cost certainty and efficiency and have a single point of contact.
Ready for the next stage of the industrial energy transition
The first projects with the eP 1000 are already underway, including at Holcim's cement plant in Dotternhausen, where the system is being used as part of a joint large-scale project with E.ON to decarbonize the cement industry. Further rollouts are in the planning stage.
