Orcan Energy introduces new efficiency solution for ships
Munich, 10 July 2018 – Leading clean tech company Orcan Energy steps up its product campaign by expanding its portfolio to include an efficiency solution for shipping. Following successful development and testing, the new product has been appraised and approved by Lloyd’s Register (LR), the most important marine classification society. With the receipt of the Design Appraisal Document from LR, any shipping operator and any shipyard can install and commission the efficiency solution from Orcan Energy quickly and easily without needing additional or complex processes. This is a real innovation for maritime waste heat recovery.
Orcan Energy CEO Dr. Andreas Sichert: “Marine emissions are one of the world’s biggest sources of pollution. The boom in the cruise shipping industry in particular is placing an increasing burden on our planet. This is why we are now especially pleased to be able to leverage our expertise in heat recovery to benefit marine engines. Any shipping operator worldwide can now commission our efficiency solutions quickly and easily. And this not only helps to protect our environment but also translates directly into cost savings for operators.”
Orcan Energy’s efficiency solution can be used on any deep-sea or inland vessel with an engine rated at 0.5 MW or higher. The intelligent heat recovery system can be deployed both for existing and new combustion engines for shipping, independently of the type of fuel that the engine uses. The unit either converts the waste heat into electricity or utilizes a mechanical connection to function as an auxiliary drive system. As a result, shipping operators can enjoy fuel savings of up to 9 percent and receive a corresponding Green Efficiency certificate. The new shipping solution from Orcan Energy offers a highly attractive option for increasing energy efficiency that reduces the vessel’s impact on the environment while significantly improving its profitability. A total of 16 of the new heat recovery systems have already been sold.
Lloyd’s Register, which publishes rules and regulations for the design and construction of ships, has issued Orcan Energy with its important Design Appraisal Document for the efficiency solution. This means that Orcan Energy’s heat recovery solution can now be deployed on any vessel. Since formal acceptance for individual applications is no longer necessary, this saves shipping operators valuable time and money. This important document underlines Orcan Energy’s high standards of quality and safety that the company is now bringing to shipping.
