Every hour, the energy equivalent of more than 100 million litres of fuel is lost unused as waste heat worldwide. Even a modern engine only achieves a conversion efficiency of around 45%. This means that around 55% of the energy contained in the fuel is released into the environment via exhaust gases and engine cooling systems.
Orcan Energy converts this waste heat into CO₂-free electricity using its compact ORC energy modules. This enables customers to reduce their electricity costs and fuel consumption while also sustainably reducing their CO₂ emissions.

The main waste heat flow from combustion engines and open gas turbines is generated in the exhaust gas. To make efficient use of this energy, an exhaust gas heat exchanger (EGHE) is integrated directly into the exhaust duct. Orcan Energy works with experienced technology partners who offer proven and reliable solutions for exhaust gas heat recovery.
The exhaust gas heat exchanger either produces heated water or thermal oil, which transfers the recovered heat safely and efficiently to Orcan Energy's efficiency PACK. In the subsequent ORC module, this thermal energy is converted into clean, CO₂-free electricity in the ORC cycle.
Another important source of heat is the engine cooling water. In conventional systems, this heat is usually dissipated to the environment via air coolers or similar cooling systems. However, the efficiency PACK can use some of this heat to preheat the ORC working fluid. This cools the engine at no cost while simultaneously reducing the pressure on the existing cooling system.

Technology
An ORC cycle operates inside the efficiency PACK: the evaporator transfers the waste heat to the efficiency PACK. This heats the pressurised working medium, which is then fed as superheated steam to the expansion machine. The steam drives the expansion engine and thus the generator, which produces electricity. The gaseous working medium is liquefied in the condenser, releasing residual heat into the ambient air. The now liquid working medium is brought to high pressure in the pump. This closes the cycle and starts it all over again.
Efficiency Packs can be used for a wide range of engines: for high and low speeds, HFO, diesel, natural gas or biogas, and even hydrogen. They significantly increase the efficiency of the plant while reducing emissions and providing free cooling capacity. The module's high partial load capacity and dynamic partial load profile ensure constant efficiency even with fluctuating heat input. The modular design minimises planning and construction costs and shortens the project duration to just a few weeks from order placement. In addition, the system can be easily transported (standard container) and relocated.
